What is video resolution?
Resolution is the number of pixels in your video, written as width by height, such as 1920 by 1080. More pixels means a sharper, more detailed picture and a larger file.
You will often see a shorthand label instead of the raw numbers. 1280 by 720 is called 720p or HD, 1920 by 1080 is 1080p or Full HD, and 3840 by 2160 is 4K. The number refers to the shorter side, so a vertical 1080 by 1920 clip is still 1080p.
Aspect ratio describes the shape of the frame. 16:9 is the standard widescreen used on YouTube and TVs, while 9:16 is the tall shape used for TikTok, Reels and Shorts. Knowing both helps you resize a video without stretching or cropping it by accident.
Common video resolutions
Here are the sizes you will run into most often.
720p (HD)
1280 by 720. Light and fast, fine for quick clips and slower connections.
1080p (Full HD)
1920 by 1080. The most common size for online video and a safe default.
4K (Ultra HD)
3840 by 2160. Very sharp and great for large screens, though the files are big.
9:16 vertical
1080 by 1920. The full-screen shape for TikTok, Reels and Shorts.
Resolution by platform
A quick guide to what each platform expects.
YouTube
1920 by 1080 (16:9) works everywhere. Upload 4K if you have it for extra sharpness.
TikTok
1080 by 1920 (9:16), full-screen vertical. Other shapes get bars added.
Instagram Reels
1080 by 1920 (9:16). A square 1080 by 1080 also works for feed posts.
YouTube Shorts
1080 by 1920 (9:16), vertical, up to 60 seconds.
